1 - Where is Saquarema?
Never heard of it? Neither did we. For European and American tourism it is a brand new area but for Brazilians Saquarema is well known as a centre of Volleyball and Surfing.
Saquarema is right in the centre of the Lake District of Brazil, just 80 km north of Rio de Janeiro, directly on the sea, overlooked by mountains and surrounded by lagoons. One of the hidden treasures of Brazil, so property prices there are still reasonable but rising steadily.
Have a look at our Google Earth Satellite photos, our Photo Show and the maps we published on our websites and get a better understanding of the unique location of Saquarema.

2 - Crime
It is the fear of crime and comments by the media that keep people away from Brazil. In reality the existence of crime is evident in large cities as everywhere else in the world. Mainly the problems are related to drugs and gang warfare in the favelas (the ghettos of big cities…) In normal circumstances you are not aware of these problems and even in the city of Rio de Janeiro you can walk around safely if you don´t project yourself as a rich tourist in Copacabana.
Saquarema is a peaceful and orderly place with little or no crime. We personally never had problems traveling all over Brazil, the worst thing that ever happened to me was that I had a watch stolen from me in Recife!
But if you are not happy going to Rio de Janeiro by yourself (for the first time) we will accompany you and show you the sights. This could be useful anyway if you don´t speak Portuguese.

3 - What is the best time to visit?
For Europeans and Americans all year round. July and August is the Brazilian winter: a climate like in Central Europe or North America in the summer. From Christmas on until Carnaval in February or March the beaches are crowded with Brazilians showing off the latest bikinis and playing beachball: Enjoying life! Then it is hot and there is more rain. During the rest of the year life is more relaxed and the beaches are not so full.

4 - How do you get here?
The nearest international airport is Rio de Janeiro (GIG). We can pick you up from there.
British Airways flies directly from London, so does Air France from Paris or Iberia from Madrid and TAP from Lisbon. Lufthansa from Frankfurt and KLM from Amsterdam. Allitalia from Rome and Milan. Several airlines stop over in Sao Paulo. So ask your travel agent about that if you want to avoid it.
Another interesting point is that sometimes there is a baggage allowance of two times 30 kg (“South America Facility”). Air France allows only 20 kg!. That could be of interest if you are heading to Saquarema with the aim of staying a bit longer and you need a lot of books to read or you want to bring your sports equipment.

5 - Vaccination?
There are no vaccination requirements for the area. There is no Malaria and no Yellow Fever nearby. Hepatitis-A is recommended as everywhere in southern countries. Ask your medical center, but please note that Brazil is a very large country. The Amazon is thousand of kilometers away. You would not prepare for a journey to Africa if you are heading for Scandinavia or Canada.
It all depends on what you are going to do in Brazil. For Saquarema and Rio de Janeiro you don´t need anything except Hepatitis vaccination if you want.

6 - What shall I bring with me?
Basically, suncream and insect repellents against mosquito bites. All our bedrooms have mosquito nets just in case, but if you want to sit outside in summer you should protect yourself in the evening, especially if you suffer from allergies.
Weapons and drugs are not allowed into Brazil. Neither are vegetables, fruit, seeds and meat … Chocolate you can bring in and it is always welcome because meat and fish are excellent in Brazil but Chocolate needs to be improved.
Summer clothing, light protection against rain, something warmer for the cooler evenings when you come in July to September. Sandals, T-Shirts, Bikinis and beachware, shorts and sunhats are cheap and good in Brazil, so don´t worry, buy them here.
Any old clothing you want to discard is very welcome here
.

7 - So, do you want to settle down here?
You will require a so-called CPF number (similar to a social security number) which we can obtain for you within a short time. Once you have this number you already can buy a car or a house without any problems.
Please have a look on our site regarding “Procedures” and “Immigration”. There you will find a lot of information about that and how you can get a Permanent Visa (VIPER) to settle down in Brazil.
You are welcome to join all the escapees looking for a better and cheaper life here in Brazil. Put some colour into your life!
